It's the little things

Small changes make me happy. I recently decided to paint my bathroom cabinets, which were honey oak, to white. Then I didn't like the wall paint color anymore. Quick trip to Home Depot and I'm now happy with the wall color.

But in the corner something was bothering me. Do you see it?

A wicker trash can given to us, as was most of our furniture in the house, by my husband's grandparents.

I am partial to the darker baskets like the one on top of the toilet.

A quick couple of coats of spray paint and I am much happier.

All in a day's work

My mom is in town and my hubby bought a portable air compressor/nail gun combo.

What does this mean?

I got a lot of projects checked off my list. Almost.

I cut, glued, assembled, and caulked.

Now it is time for paint!

These future candlestick holders still need to be assembled.

We had a new staircase banister installed last year. I kept the newel posts after seeing these candlestick tutorial popping up. Yay for recycling! I'll post the finished products soon.

Dress-Up Dress: Gold/Red Version

My friend's 6 year old daughter loves to play dress-up. The only problem is that she has been blessed with tall genes so the normal store bought dress up is too small for her. On a trip to my favorite fabric store in Solvang, CA I had planned to buy a formal and revamp it for her. Their formals run from 6-20 dollars each! Pretty cheap. Looking around the store I found an even better deal. 1 buck! The only catch was that these particular formals were unfinished.

I found this gold dress for $1.00! The zipper just needed to be attached. It even came with the zipper it just wasn't sewn in yet.

I nabbed this top for $1.00. It was missing a skirt bottom.

Then I headed to the fabric store and picked out a sparkly red netted fabric. Like something you would use for veils, over skirts, etc. I bought a yard for about 5 bucks. If I had been smarter I probably could have bought less fabric and it would have been even cheaper.

I removed the top from the gold dress, attached a red sparkly train, attached the red top to the gold skirt, added a zipper, and then used a fabric scrap to create a flower for the back.

Not too bad for under ten bucks!

Kid's Papasan Chair

While browsing one of my favorite blogs, Make It and Love It, I saw how she had made a totally new seat for a kid's papasan chair. I have always wanted to get Julia a little chair to put in her room for reading. But never did I expect to find a chair just like the one on Ashley's blog. She had a great tutorial on how to do this project as well so I just had to follow along.



The best part about this project was that it didn't cost me a dime. I would have loved to bind it with a contrasting color but I was trying really hard to just use what I had on hand already. I found the chair at our ward's FreeCycle event. My husband and a few of the other men couldn't believe I was taking this chair home. But I accepted their challenge.

So after creating the chair I dug out a quilt top that I had made for Julia. I found some batting and backed the quilt with white flannel. Now she has a cozy blanket to snuggle with while reading.
I am now happy with her bedding ensemble. Now I just need to fix the curtains and create a valance.
